About the Hurly Burly

Organised by Level Water, the Hurly Burly takes place in the dramatic Mawddach Estuary on the edge of Snowdonia. It starts on the sandy beach at Barmouth & finishes inland at the George III pub in Penmaenpool.

It’s smaller & more intimate than some Level Water events, but no less special. The vibe is friendly & quietly buzzing, with brilliant volunteers, a heated changing tent & a warm, welcoming finish.

Here’s our hot take on the Hurly Burly

A fast, tidal-assisted 10km
The incoming tide is powerful. For many swimmers, this feels closer to a 6km effort than a traditional 10km.

Wild & remote-feeling
Snowdonia’s mountains surround you. It feels adventurous & a bit rugged, in the best possible way.

Less about crowds, more about connection
Quieter than the Bantham Swoosh or Dart10k, but still full of warmth & shared excitement.

Finish at a pub
You’re swept to the doors of the George III for hot food, drinks & a post-swim hangout.

Cold water, real conditions
This is North Wales in September. Expect cooler water, potential chop & changeable weather.

What makes the Hurly Burly different

The Hurly Burly is unique in both speed & setting.

You start at the beach & swim inland, carried by a strong incoming tide that accelerates as you go. Early on, you pass under the iconic Barmouth railway bridge - a moment that’s thrilling & requires attention. You’ll want to lift your head, sight carefully & aim for the gaps to avoid drifting into the structure as the tide pulls you through.

There can be shallow sections depending on tide height. If you touch bottom, you may need to briefly wade before swimming on. It’s all part of the adventure.

Because the tide is so strong, swimmers tend to finish closer together than in other long swims. You can go hard or take it steady - the river brings everyone home.

Swim difficulty - who's it for

This is not a beginner event. The Hurly Burly suits swimmers who:

- Have plenty of outdoor swimming experience

- Are comfortable in cold, choppy & fast-moving water

- Can swim at least 6km continuously

- Can hold roughly a 40-minute mile pace in the pool

- Enjoy wild, unpredictable environments

It’s less suitable if this would be your first outdoor swim, or if you’re uneasy with strong currents.

Preparing for the Hurly Burly

Preparation here is about skill & confidence, not just fitness.

Practise swimming outdoors
Get used to navigating in open water. Fast water behaves very differently from the pool. If you can get in a river as part of your prep, that's an ideal way to get used to holding direction while the river moves you.

Work on sighting under pressure
You’ll need to lift your head, look ahead & stay relaxed while moving quickly.

Train in colder conditions
Include autumnal swims if you can. Cold tolerance matters.

Expect chop & wind
This estuary is exposed. Calm days happen, but don’t rely on them.

Respect the distance
Even with tidal help, 10km is a big ask. Train properly so you can enjoy the ride rather than endure it.

Plan a Snowdonia weekend
The area is stunning. Hiking, exploring & road trips make this one worth travelling for.

It’s not the place to test whether you like open water. It’s the place to celebrate that you already do.

I love the Hurly Burly. The setting, the speed, the friendliness - it’s special. The tide is outrageous, the bridge section is exhilarating, & finishing at a pub never gets old.

Chillswim Ullswater 7.5 Miles End to End

Ullswater is often described as the most beautiful of the Chillswim swims, & it’s easy to see why. The lake is quieter, wilder & more dramatic than Coniston, with huge mountains rising straight out of the water for much of the route. It’s a favourite among many experienced swimmers, & a brilliant step up if you’ve already done a long lake swim & want something that feels properly special.
