The Bantham Swoosh is a renowned 6-kilometer open water swim held annually in the Avon (Aune) estuary in Devon. The event starts in the picturesque village of Aveton Gifford and concludes at the stunning Bantham Beach. Swimmers experience the unique thrill of the "swoosh," where the ebbing tide funnels through a narrow section of the river, propelling participants at speeds up to four times their usual swimming pace. This exhilarating natural current, which can run at 8 knots, offers a distinctive and enjoyable challenge for swimmers.

The estuary's shallow, sandy-bottomed nature ensures clear water conditions, allowing swimmers to often view the riverbed throughout the course. However, the swim requires good experience in outdoor swimming, as participants may encounter variable weather conditions, including choppy and cold waters. It's advisable to practice in similar conditions to prepare adequately.
Organized by Level Water, a charity dedicated to providing swimming lessons for children with disabilities, the Bantham Swoosh offers participants the option to swim in either the Suits (wetsuit) or Skins (no wetsuit) category. This event not only presents a unique swimming experience but also supports a meaningful cause, contributing to the charity's mission to make swimming accessible to all children.
The 2025 Bantham Swoosh is scheduled for Saturday, July 12, with the swim start time to be confirmed. The event is open to swimmers aged 18 and over. For those interested in participating, it's recommended to register early, as the event tends to sell out quickly.
